About

IslandHacks is a 12-hour student-organized coding marathon (called a "hackathon") open to all high school students in Alameda. Admission is free and three meals are catered. Tech-related prizes are available at the end of the event through raffle or by student vote after project presentation. IslandHacks 2024 is generously hosted by Exelixis at their office on Bay Farm Island, 1951 Harbor Bay Parkway.

What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is a social coding event where like-minded coders come together, optionally in teams, to design, write, test, and present a project all within the duration of the event. Hackathons often have a theme to help guide participants' ideas for the competition. IslandHacks is open to coders of all skill levels, and a web development workshop is available for anyone looking to learn or improve their skills enough to work on a project.

Theme

This year's theme was "something that improves health" as a nod to our biggest sponsor's focus on health sciences and technology. We saw some amazing projects come out of this theme, and we were all impressed with everyone's creativity!

FAQs

A hackathon is a social coding event where students first learn, then collaborate with others to create projects based on a specific theme (e.g. "code something that would benefit your everyday life").
This year, IslandHacks is going to be hosted at offices owned by Exelixis, a biotech company located on Bay Farm Island. The address is 1951 Harbor Bay Parkway, Alameda, CA, 94502.
IslandHacks is open to all high school students in Alameda! This hackathon is unfortunately not open to alumni or students outside of Alameda.
A limited supply of spare Chromebooks are available, but ideally students should arrive to the event with their own laptop or Chromebook. Students may choose to ask their school for a loaner. All websites referenced during the event are AUSD-friendly and fantastic projects can be coded on Chromebooks!
IslandHacks is completely FREE! We provide meals, snacks, and drinks for all attendees, as well as other prizes!
IslandHacks is completely led by students, but we'll have plenty of supervisors on hand! Last year, our event was sponsored by AUSD parents, teachers, and other staff members, and this year we'll also have staff from Exelixis supervising!
